Noel Whelan has told Football Insider that Rangers should make a move for Rhian Brewster ahead of next season.
The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Swansea, but Whelan believes that he would be a good fit for Steven Gerrard and the Ibrox outfit.
Speaking about the youngster, he said: “Brewster might be the key player that Steven thinks he can take for a year. He is a fox in the box and that is what teams want.
“Let him have that full preseason with the team and get bedded in. With the likes of Ryan Kent, who Rhian will already know, that relationship will ease him in and of course, he will know Steven as well. Steven will know what kind of character and quality he is getting from the player.”
Of course, Alfredo Morelos is Gerrard’s number one striker at Ibrox at the moment, having already scored 29 goals in all competitions this term. However, he has been linked with a number of clubs, and could well be out of the door this summer. Jermain Defoe is the other main option, but recent injuries indicate that the boss may not be able to rely on him in the future, particularly for a full campaign.
That would leave a spot open for another player to come in, and Gerrard’s previous Liverpool connections could give them the edge in the race for Brewster. The starlet has impressed so far during his loan spell in Wales, scoring four goals in 11 appearances to date, but with Roberto Firmino ahead of him at Anfield he is unlikely to break into the first team just yet.
A loan spell could be perfect for all involved. The £4.86m-valued ace – as per Transfermarkt – could continue to show he has what it takes to make it in the game, whilst Rangers would have a player hungry to succeed, at least for one campaign. Ross Wilson must make use of the tools he has at his disposal.
